Physical Therapy or Physiotherapy for
Stroke
Purpose: to help you regain Physical strength, movement
and ability.
Probably the most common therapy after a stroke, physical
therapy aims to help your stroke recovery through improving your movement, strength, and
coordination.
A physical therapist will assess the impact of your stroke
and decide what activities will be most beneficial at helping you gain your abilities back. They will
also encourage you to use affected limbs as much as you can, to encourage the rebuilding of nerve
pathways in the brain (which allows you to do things again).
The important key to success in physical therapy after stroke is to practice, practice,
practice. The more you do the activities your therapist gives you, the more your body and brain learn to
do what you want it to do.
If you really want to get healthy quickly, you need to make sure your physical therapist has a good outlook for
you. How much and how quickly do they think you'll recover? If you want to recover more
quickly or fully, you might consider using other therapies to help with your stroke recovery at the same time,
or practicing each activity more than what they tell you to do, so you can move on to the the next ability
faster.
